What kind of culture influences through technology and Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, how?

Critical Reflection

In the present time people are influenced by the digital world and slowly they develop a kind of digital culture in their life. This is the implication of computers and internet invention. People create many programs or gadget to make their life more convenient for example cell phone, PDA, and of course computers. Today in education they’ve started a digital culture style of learning as we can see student submitting their works and attending lectures through the internet. They can do assignments, attending their lectures and downloading notes just through their phone and Mac’s personal computers. There is possibility to reshape a new culture through this technology; it’s happening now. People socializing, playing games and working through this technology and gradually people are more connected with each other via internet based technology. These are the pictures of the example how people used the internet:-

Instead of watching the television they watch YouTube.

They make money by blogging

They send e-mails instead of writing mails.

They discuss things through forums.

They prefer to send instant messages rather than meet up and have a talk.

Internet slowly becomes the basis of people’s life in many ways. We are revolving into a new culture which is digital culture.

Personal Reflection

The lecturer explained about the technology culture kind of topic. Then she showed us a video of a group of college student learning via their Apple Gadgets. It was so convenient surprisingly because they just brought the iphone and use the Mac pc's to go through their studies and i didn't see any books in the videos. That was a great innovation on how we use technology in education.

How do you relate the information given to you in the documentary to the theory of Media Imperialism that we talked about in lecture?

Critical Reflection

Media imperialism means that someone manipulating the media to influence people to do something that he wanted them to do. This is a terrifying power if they misused the power it will only cause chaotic situation. Media imperialism also apply in the government conspiracy. The politician used this kind of dirty trick to pull an action. For example in the documentary video “The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" George Bush blindly takes action on the people who that he assumed to be terrorist to be caught. It’s all about one thinking then he apply the media imperialism to make his assumption become true but it’s not actually. The news also had been manipulated by the government for example the tragedies of September 11 the media told the world that terrorist did the plane crash but after that there was many doubt about the explosion some says it was government conspiracy. This is how the media imperialism works and it's pretty much the same as mind control it’s has the power to control the world by using media.

Personal reflection

This week the lecturer gave a lecture about the media imperialism and showed us some videos that related to the topic. It’s really an interesting topic because I learned the ‘real’ politics from it.

Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" choose a medium or media application or tool and explain its media effects?

Critical reflection.

Mcluhan created the tetrad of media. As you can see in the above diagram there is 4 human action that affected the medium of the media which is enhances, reverses, retrieves and obsolesces. There are many type of medium but I’ll just elaborate about the cell phone. Nowadays , cell phones are widely used ,it’s convenient to bring them anywhere because of the size and wireless system. This will enhances how fast people get connected to each other just by calling or sms (short messaging system). Primitive or old way of communication will no longer being used such as carrier pigeon , heliographs , smoke signal and telegraph and maybe in the future people will stop sending letters. Cell phone probably gain a wide connection with many people and easily information can be inquire. In the future maybe people will not see each other face to face because of the cell phone and they will prefer to stay at home and make a video call.

Personal Reflection.

The lecturer was giving a lecture about a guy named Mc Luhan which is explains about effects of the media to human and what is cold and hot media exactly .

Obscenity, pornography and indecency: What are the differences between these terms?

Critical Reflection

Obscenity , indecency and pornography it’s all different things and I will explain about it. First ,Obscenity means to describe anything such as inappropriate words , media forms ,and pictures which portray any offensive particularly in sexual issues which still can be accepted in moral standard. A few pictures of obscenity:-

Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty during an AIDS awareness program in India.

A Flyer.

Indecency means something or someone looked unsuitable or no manners .It can be anything that describe indecency , for example someone who screaming in the public without reason or, a women who wears a sexy dress which exposed almost of their skin walking on the streets. Many teenager nowadays doing some indecency stuff because of they think it was a fun things to do , this is a video of public indecency:-

Pornography means explicit representation of sexual activity in some media form , for examples videos , pictures and magazines. Pornography are usually a social taboo but it became popular with the spread of media especially from the internet. Below is an example of Pornography DVD cover :-

WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY AND IT'S IMPORTANT FOR STUDENT TO BE MEDIA LITERACY?

Critical Reflection

Media literacy is basically the ability of people to analyze , appraise , accessing any media forms and creating a media which is the same as critical thinking. People will ask for themselves why and what are they're watching , reading or listening. Media literacy can prevent any negative forms of media to influence people who believe what they see without thinking about it. For a student this is kind of important for example we’re reading some news who would know if it’s true because anyone can bluff about it. So, with this critical thinking we can investigate who published or posted this information , which company , and any evidence that relevant to believe it. It’s all about thinking about the contents of media.

Personal Reflection

This week mlc class just a like usual class, the lecturer said something about media literacy and representation. At the end of the class we watched some videos. I did not enjoyed the class much because I was so sleepy.

SHORT EXPLANATION ABOUT MEDIA STEREOTYPES.

Critical Reflection

Media stereotypes a statement of racial issues that inserted into a media form such as cartoons , advertisement , newspaper and any suitable media. Media stereotypes had been happening for a long time ago because of racist attitudes in society. The stereotypes issues are mostly about race , politics , religion and terrorism. A stereotype example ; ‘black skinned man should not lives in our country’, that’s just an example for a racist stereotypes statement. To attract people they put the stereotypes statement into a dialog or something else maybe a song lyrics. That’s all my explanation for media stereotypes.

Personal Reflection

There’s no class this week because it was a public holiday for maulidur rasul .^_^

Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it? If yes, why? If no, why? Discuss this in your own words.

Critical Reflection

Do i take the the information or news in the internet seriously?, I would say both yes and no .Actually it’s depends on which website are the information came from and who is the writer or uploader .I will say yes if the website is an official news website for example www.utusan.com.my and //thestar.com.my because what we read there is the same as every morning newspaper which people read.Besides these websites there a not much website that we can say yes for the information but Wikipedia is a good example for an true informative website. So the information by the official and trustworthy website can be accepted.

I will say no if some news that came from a forum or internet community because there is a lot of scammer in this kind of website.I can’t take the information 100% because I did not know where they inquire the news. I just read the news to know something but it’s not that I believe the information 100% but just to be cautios if the news it’s about disaster or something that will affect our lives.

Personal Reflection.

I think mlc class is the same as everyday but something was different the lecturer played a few videos which is interesting and creative too , that ‘s all my personal reflection.
